For the mothers we know

For the mothers we know

Correct me if I'm wrong, but reading—especially fiction—can feel almost impossible for mothers.

If you have young children, is there ever really a moment when you're not thinking about them? Whether they're eating well, sleeping enough or speaking on time. Whether you're doing this whole thing "right." Even in the quiet, the mind rarely is.

And that's exactly why rest matters.

Not just the practical kind, but the kind where you get to return to yourself for a while. The kind where you're not needed every second. The kind where you can sit with a book and remember what it feels like to be absorbed in something that's just yours.

This Mother's Day, maybe we can gently nudge the mothers in our lives toward that kind of rest.

Encourage your mum friend to take a proper break—whether that's an afternoon to herself, a slow morning with a book or a small indulgence like a manicure or pedicure. A day off from chores. A pause from the constant doing.

A week would be even better—but let's start somewhere.

Here are a few books I'd recommend:

The Unlikely Motherhood of Shaleni May

The Unlikely Motherhood of Shaleni May
For the mother who does things her own way

Shaleni May never planned for motherhood—until a chance encounter, a rescue dog and an unexpected adoption at forty-five upended everything. Wry, warm and wildly relatable, this is a story of late-life surprises, self-doubt and redefining family on your own terms.

Sugarbread

Sugarbread
For the mother whose own mother is still a mystery to her

Pin must not become like her mother—but nobody will tell her why. Between bursary-girl pressures, racial taunts and a grandmother who moves in with new house rules, she hunts for answers in Ma's cooking. Old secrets surface. The truth, when it comes, is complicated.

Science of the Secondary #17: Straw

Science of the Secondary #17: Straw
For the mother who deserves something just a little different

A slim, serious meditation on the humble straw—its sensory role, its quiet intimacy with the beverages we love and why it might deserve a second look. Thoughtful, unexpected and gently persuasive.

The Pink, White and Blue Universe

The Pink, White and Blue Universe
For the mother who loves to travel through fiction—and doesn't mind being moved

Set in the colour-drenched chaos of Mumbai, Meira Chand's story collection weaves faith, sensuality and pathos into portraits of people navigating a world that is both humane and pitiless. Tender, dark, comic and always honest.

Step into Mumbai

To every mother reading this—the ones running on four hours of sleep, the ones who haven't finished a hot meal in years, the ones who give and give and somehow still find more to give. You deserve a proper break. Not a five-minute one. A real one.

This Mother's Day, I hope you get it.

(And if nobody's planned it for you yet—plan it yourself. You've earned it.)
